Non-conventional applications of microalgal culture
Microalgae are known as an important source of protein, lipids and carbohydrates and their products are applied in nutraceutical food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. Carbon dioxide sequestration using microalgae is a promising method for both combating global warming and increasing the indoor environmental quality. Among the different microalgae species, Scenedesmus obliquus is characterized by a mixotrophic ability, a capability to grow in static culture for some months and in a wide temperature range (15-35°C).
Non-conventional cultures of S. obliquus in photobioreactors applied to the internal window surface as static screen in buildings (PBSRs) will be described.
