Digitalization and sustainability of indoor farming
Indoor farms are a recent evolution of greenhouse crops, from which they differ in urban or peri-urban location, the dependence on artificial lighting, the use of multi-layer hydroponics and also a more advanced digitization, which applies the typical home automation technologies (domotics). The sustainability of indoor farming essentially depends on the reduction of direct (e.g. electricity for artificial lighting) and indirect (i.e., linked to the production of the materials used for the construction of growth chambers, fertilizers, etc.) on the increase in production and its commercial value (eg through bio-fortification, pesticide-free cultivation, etc.).
