Spirulina cultivation exploiting flue gases from a steelmaking factory: a step toward sustainability
Abstract
It is several decades since microalgae have been studied for their many industrial applications and, in particular, in the last few years the focus shifted on using these organisms to transform waste products and/or pollutants into a new opportunity. With this in mind, Danieli S.p.a. invested in an experimental project in which Spirulina is cultivated exploiting steelmaking factory treated flue gases, rich in CO2, and cutting some of the energy needed to thermostat the culture using thermal waste from the reheating furnace. This project has a double purpose: reduce greenhouse gases emissions while obtaining high value goods.
