Unlocking potential of genetic enhancement of microalgae for enhanced oil and fatty acid production
Abstract
Microalgae are a promising, sustainable resource of oil and fatty acids, important for various industrial and nutritional applications. Genetic improvement of microalgae offers an opportunity to increase oil productivity, modify fatty acid composition and enhance yields. In this presentation, I will highlight the importance of genetic modifications, such as mutagenesis and genetic engineering in improving desirable traits of selected microalgae. These approaches enable the development of productive strains with tailored lipid and fatty acid profiles for specific applications such as the production of biofuels, dietary supplements and aquaculture feeds. In addition, strain improvement strategies can address the challenges associated with scalability and resilience to environmental factors, thus promoting the commercial viability of the microalgae-based industry.
