Biography:
Il Prof. Pasquale Chiaiese ha conseguito la laurea in Scienze Biologiche nel 1996 e ha ottenuto un dottorato in Plant Science presso l’Australian National University nel 2004. Attualmente, svolge il ruolo di docente presso il Dipartimento di Agraria dell’Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. Il suo campo di ricerca si concentra sulla genetica e la biotecnologia, applicate a piante e microalghe. I suoi obiettivi, sia in ambito agrario che industriale, sono integrati in un modello di economia circolare.

Genetic Approaches to Enhancing Microalgae

Abstract
Microalgae, photosynthetic organisms of significant interest across various sectors, pose challenges for large-scale production. This presentation delves into genetic strategies for the improvement of microalgae features. We will provide an overview of genetic engineering techniques, such as stable transformation and genome editing. We will illustrate case studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of these strategies in enhancing the properties of microalgae. Lastly, we will explore future prospects, such as the use of CRISPR for targeted genome interventions for the production of industrially interesting metabolites. The ultimate goal is to harness the potential of microalgae for industrial and environmental applications.
