Potential of sustainable bio-hydrogen production from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803
Abstract
Photobiological H2 production is a promising renewable energy source. The freshwater cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 is considered a potential bio-hydrogen production source due to its ability to grow in harsh environments and the relative ease to be genetically manipulated. The aim of this work is the optimization of Synechocystis cultures using seawater to save the use of freshwater and to create a barrier against competing microorganisms, and wastewater as nutrient sources instead of chemical fertilizers. In order to enhance and make bio-H2 production more competitive, different strategies are developing and some of the results obtained will be presented. This activity is carried out within the PhotoSynH2 Project funded by HORIZON-EIC-2021 Pathfinder program.
