Microalgae in the supplement sector: market and future prospects
Abstract
Microalgae, with over 30,000 known species, have numerous fields of application: nutraceuticals, cosmetics, animal feed, aquaculture, biofuels and pharmaceuticals. The world and European market is growing steadily with a focus on quality and BIO-certified products. In particular, in human nutrition, they are an important source of protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids, rich in minerals, antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatories. The approval of some strains and products as Novel Food could give rise to new alternative and sustainable vegetable source products with further market growth.
In addition to current microalgae based food supplements e.g. Spirulina, Chlorella and Dunaliella, the focus is rising over protein concentrates and new carotenoids.
