From waste to resource: valorising wastewater through cascade cropping and aquaponic systems
Abstract
The use of hydroponics and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), for plant and animal food production, is rapidly growing worldwide. The wastewater from hydroponics and RAS is generally salty but rich in many essential nutrients for plants, and could be reused for crop irrigation, thus reducing the use of fresh water, environmental pollution resulting from nutrient emissions into the environment, and the costs for wastewater treatment and fertilisation. Among wild edible plants and cultivated vegetables, there are several species of halophytes or salt-tolerant glycophytes that could be grown with saline wastewater in cascade cropping systems or decoupled aquaponic systems.
