Sara Zenoni lavora nell’ambito delle biotecnologie applicate al miglioramento genetico della vite per incrementare sostenibilità e competitività della filiera. Ha contribuito significativamente alla comprensione dei meccanismi molecolari che regolano la maturazione bacca di vite in relazione all’ambiente e al genotipo. Si occupa di sviluppare approcci molecolari innovativi, come il gene editing tramite CRISPR/Cas, e di ottimizzare protocolli per la coltivazione in vitro e la rigenerazione di genotipi recalcitranti.

EdiVite: how genome editing can help viticulture

Abstract
EdiVite is a spin-off of Verona University born from the need of the Veneto wine sector to reduce the use of pesticides by obtaining improved vine clones for resistance to powdery mildew and downy mildew. To do this, EdiVite has optimized and applied regeneration protocols for entire plants starting from single cells in which the CRISPR/Cas9 system was applied, allowing the induction of the desired mutation and not altering the genomic background. To date, plants with the desired mutation have been obtained which, however, are in the greenhouse and cannot be tested in the open field.
