Integration of microalgae-based processes in municipal wastewater treatment plants
Microalgae/bacteria consortia are an appealing alternative solution to traditional biological processes in urban and agro-industrial wastewater bioremediation since a significant reduction in the operational costs for aeration is expected. In addition, the production of algal biomass makes it possible to change the perspective of waste sludge management, which could become a resource to be exploited. However, for a comprehensive assessment, the constraints posed by the weather-climatic conditions and the greater footprint of solar-driven processes must be taken in due account.
